Whaling Logbook/Journal, Ship Atlantic, 1842-1844.

Logbook/Journal for the Ship Atlantic, kept by Joseph Judson, chronicles a two-season whaling cruise, commencing August 17, 1842 and ending May 4, 1844. Journal includes daily entries about the whaling expedition, flukes showing whales killed (these are drawn by pen and not stamped as in other journals), poetry, and songs. Detailed pencil sketches are included of ships under sail; several of these drawings are dated 1839 and 1840, indicating that they may not have been done during the actual journey or were copied from contemporary sources of the time. Judson also includes a list of American whale ships laying in Port Lahaina, Isle of Mowee; another list indicates the ships spoken by the Ship Atlantic on its outward bound journey. The itineray was Montauk Point NY to Cape Verde, round the Cape of Good Hope, through the Indian Ocean, past New Zealand to the Society Islands, on to Maui, thence to the Gulph of Alaska. The return trip was via the Hawaiian Islands, the Societies, Cape Horn, Brazil, and home to Bridgeport, CT.
